Overview
This course is interactive and relies on delegate participation. There is a day of classroom/ seminar and model based teaching aimed at developing a training framework to apply to endoscopic training. Seminars, model work and group teaching are used. Day 2 is used to apply the knowledge from day 1 teaching in a clinical environment.

Details

An intensive 2 day course, covering the principles of adult education and technique of coaching trainees in practical skills. The course will cover different methods for supporting learning, types of assessment and feedback and will involve small group role play exercises.

The learning outcomes are to:

  • Demonstrate techniques for coaching basic practical endoscopy skills
  • In the skills lab environment
  • In the clinical setting

Use approved methods for assessment of competence/ performance

  • In the skills lab environment
  • In the clinical setting

Describe effective means of providing feedback to trainees

Formulate a strategy for dealing with lack of progress or slow learning curve

The faculty is drawn from a group of Scottish, JAG approved endoscopists with several years experience of coaching trainees. The state of the art facilities in the Cuschieri Skills Centre provide an excellent learning environment for acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills during this course.

You must complete a Clinical Access Form for NHS Tayside in order to receive a Letter of Clinical Access that will authorise you to have patient access while participating on the course.  Along with your completed form you must also supply;

  1. Evidence of Eligibility to work in the UK eg Passport / Visa
  2. Evidence of GMC Registration
  3. Copy of Curriculum Vitae
  4. Photocopy of current Disclosure Clearance Certificate
  5. Date of last Occupational Health Check

Application criteria/Target audience
All indepependent endoscopists who are involved in teaching and training in endoscopy.

The course may also be suitable for senior accredited trainees who wish to further develop their teaching skills. This course is essential for those wishing to become faculty at endoscopy training centres or train on JAG courses. Individuals must be independent and competent in the skills they are intending to train in before applying for the relevant training the trainers course.

Please note, this course is not designed to provide procedural skill improvement it is focused on developing trainer competencies and skills.
